French Onion Soup Burgers
Hearth Whole Grain Hamburger Buns

  • 1 package Aunt Millie's Hearth Whole Grain Hamburger Buns
  • 2 lb. ground beef, formed into hamburger patties
  • 4 large sweet onions
  • 1 c. beef stock
  • 2 tsp. dried thyme, chopped
  • 3 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 8 slices swiss cheese
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • ½ tsp. pepper

Bechamel Sauce:

  • 2 Tbsp. butter
  • 2 Tbsp. flour
  • 1 ½ c. warmed milk
  • ½ tsp. pepper

Yield: 8 servings

  1. Peel onions and cut them into half-moons. Saute in pan over medium heat in the olive oil until caramelized. Add stock and thyme and cook until most of the stock is evaporated. This may take up to 20 minutes. Add salt and pepper and set aside.
  2. Meanwhile, melt butter and whisk in flour, stirring constantly for about 2 minutes. Whisk in warmed milk until smooth. Bring to a small boil so that it thickens nicely. Remove from heat, add salt and pepper and set aside.
  3. Grill patties for 6 – 8 minutes on each side, adding Swiss cheese after flipping. Thermometer should register 165 degrees.
  4. Remove from grill and place on hamburger buns. Top with desired amount of bechamel sauce and onions.
