Recipe for Fried Italian Grilled Cheese
Fried Italian Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Country Buttermilk Bread


  • 8 slices Aunt Millie's Homestyle Buttermilk Bread
  • 8 thick slices smoked mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 c. basil leaves
  • 4 Tbsp. vegetable oil


  • 1 large egg
  • 1 Tbsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 c. skim milk
  • 1/2 c. water
  • 3/4 c. whole wheat flour
  • pinch of salt

Dipping Sauces:

  • Spaghetti Sauce
  • Pizza Sauce
  • Pesto

Yield: 4 Sandwiches


  1. Top 4 bread slices with one slice of mozzarella.
  2. Top with a few basil leaves.
  3. Top with another slice of mozzarella.
  4. Top with remaining bread slice.
  5. In a medium mixing bowl, beat together egg, milk, and water. Add baking powder, flour, and salt and beat until smooth.
  6. Pour vegetable oil into skillet over medium-high heat. Once oil is heated, dip one sandwich into batter until evenly coated and place into heated skillet.
  7. Cook sandwich for approzimately 1 1/2 - 2 minutes per side until golden and crispy. Remove sandwich from heat and let set for a few minutes.
  8. Serve warm with your choice of dipping sauce.
