HOW IT ALL STARTED

Four generations
of family baking.

Way back in 1901, John B. Franke launched the Wayne Biscuit Company in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Propelled by the popularity of their “Perfection Wafers,” or “P.W. Crackers,” the product line expanded to include bread, cakes and cookies. Wayne Biscuit Company built a reputation for excellence and innovation, becoming the first bakery in Indiana to offer wrapped bread in 1923.

By 1946, the demand for their breads outpaced every other offering and Wayne Biscuit Company went all in, phasing out cookies and cakes to focus on making the highest quality breads. In 1950, the bakery’s name changed to “Perfection Bakeries,” reflecting this commitment to quality. At the same time, generational changes in the Franke family tree saw business ownership go through a name change as well, shifting from “Franke” to “Popp.”

Innovative thinking continued to drive the business forward. In the 1980’s, John Popp pioneered a new distribution strategy that used a network of dedicated truck drivers to improve service to retailers. Today, a fleet of more than 600 trucks helps to distribute the half-million pounds of baked goods we produce fresh every day.

Finally, in 2005, Perfection Bakeries introduced a new name and spokespersonality to reflect the home-baked quality of their bread—and the Aunt Millie’s Bakeries we all know and love was born.
