Ingredients

1 tablespoon

butter

1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon

oil, divided

3 cups

finely chopped yellow onions

3/4 teaspoon

salt, divided

1/2 teaspoon

black pepper

4 tablespoons

water

1 pound

ground beef

1/2 teaspoon

black pepper

3 tablespoons

yellow mustard

6 slices

American cheese

Sauce

1/2 cup

mayonnaise

1 1/2 tablespoons

ketchup

1 tablespoon

pickle relish

1 teaspoon

sugar

3/4 teaspoon

white vinegar

Toppings

Shredded lettuce

Directions

  • Step 1

In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, sugar, and vinegar. Stir until smooth. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.

  • Step 2

Heat the butter and oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add the chopped onions and ½ teaspoon of salt. Stir to coat.

  • Step 3

Cook for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally and adding a tablespoon of water as needed to deglaze the pan and prevent burning. Once the onions are deep golden, remove from heat.

  • Step 4

Divide the ground beef into 6 equal portions and form into balls. Flatten each into a patty slightly wider than your buns. Season both sides with salt and pepper.

  • Step 5

Heat 1 teaspoon of oil in a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Place the patties in the skillet and cook for about 2 minutes. Spread mustard on the top of each patty, then flip. Top each with slices of American cheese and cook for another 1–2 minutes, until the cheese is melted and the patties are cooked through.

  • Step 6

Spread the prepared sauce on the bottom buns. Place a cheesy, mustard-crusted patty on each bun and spoon caramelized onions over the top. Add shredded lettuce if desired. Finish with the top bun and serve.
